There are several conferences for homeschoolers.  The Great Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati is the largest in the Midwest.  These tips are based on experiences there, and may not apply to all conventions.

  1. Buy your tickets in advance.  
    You can get discount tickets online up until 2 days before the convention starts.  The prices increase at the door, and you might not get into some of the special speakers you wanted to hear.  Also, if you plan on the children attending the Children's Conference, you will want to book as soon as these become available.

  2. Ask for a parking discount.
    Usually, there is a parking lot offering discounts near the convention.  This could even be free.  Always worth asking for a discount.  They sometimes post this information on the convention website.

It's that time of year once again! The smell of new curriculum, the whine of lazy kids, and the joy of new supplies have come together at the start of school.  This also means that it is time for you to send in your Letter of Intent (LOI) to homeschool to your Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP).

In the state of Kentucky, you are required to send a letter each year to your school district notifying them of your intent to homeschool.  The compulsory school age in the state of KY is 6 to 18.  This means if your child will be 6 years of age or older before Oct. 1, 2016, you will need to send in this notifcation.  Grade level is not required.

Some of you may have received a form from your school, but they may be asking for more information than required.  Your LOI needs to include the name of each child, their age, and address.  We have a sample letter on our site, along with some other useful information, including DPP addresses, here:

You should send in your LOI to the DPP of your district within the first 2 weeks of the start of school.  We highly suggest sending with a Return Receipt.  Keep this signed receipt with your records.  By sending in your LOI within the required time period, you are protecting yourself.
